abstract = {To promote the development of thermal energy storage (TES), the sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) presents interesting thermal properties. However, this material may suffer from aging throughout thermal cycles. Various solutions were explored in the literature to limit this aging, mainly based on the use of additives such as water. In this study, two samples were prepared. The first one consisted of raw SAT material whereas 3 wt.% of supplementary water has been added to the second one. They were then poured into 350 cm3 bricks, which were placed in an experimental test bench. After 35 cycles between 20 and 70 °C, a drop of about 10% of the latent heat was observed for the first sample. This behavior was like the literature data. For the second sample, the decrease of latent heat was more rapid (about 30%). Contrary to our expectations, the water addition seems not beneficial for the improvement of thermal stability. Interestingly, we noticed that the drop of the latent heat was fully reversible after sample stirring. This degradation might not be related to a thermal destructive mechanism but rather to a global segregation phenomenon. This segregation may be due to the breaking of hydrogen bonding between anhydrous sodium acetate and water, resulting in the separation of the two species.},

abstract = {Phase change material (PCM) experiencing supercooling and phase change hysteresis are widely reported in the literature. However, only few studies model analytically such PCM, and they mostly focus on either supercooling or phase change hysteresis, but rarely on both phenomena. Moreover, partial phase change cycles, with an incomplete melting or solidification, are rarely considered even if these processes occur frequently in latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems. The objective of this study is to model analytically the thermal behaviour of a PCM experiencing supercooling and phase change hysteresis, for complete and partial phase change cycles. The developed method, based on a heat source term, enables to model the recalescence process during the solidification. Currently rarely considered, the influence of the cooling rate on the supercooling degree and the recalescence process is evaluated with a phenomenological approach. For partial cycles, the different behavior between heating and cooling is modelled with the hysteresis model “curve scale” already validated in literature. The experimental validation is carried out on a PCM brick sample, monitoring both the heat flux and the PCM temperature, which enables to characterize a greater mass of PCM compared to direct scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis. The selected PCM undergoing supercooling during solidification is PEG6000, a polymer suitable for domestic hot water (DHW) storage. Results show a good agreement between experimental and numerical results for complete heating and cooling cycles. The behavior laws used to model the solidification with the supercooling and recalescence processes are validated for the cooling rate range tested. The modelling is also satisfactory concerning the experiments on partial solidification for different temperature plateaus. However, the model fails to correctly represent the thermal behavior for a cooling process after a partial melting of the PCM. To conclude, the developed model enables to represent accurately the thermal behaviour of a PCM experiencing supercooling and phase change hysteresis for most of the phase change processes studied. Investigations on the thermal conditions influencing the crystalline structure and the effect on the phase change dynamic are suggested to improve supercooling modelling. The developed model needs to be validated for PCM having a higher supercooling degree, such as sugar alcohols or salt hydrates.},

abstract = {This study presents an experimental comparison of three characterization methods for phase change materials (PCM). Two methods were carried out with a calorimeter, the first with direct scanning (DSC) and the second with step scanning (STEP). The third method is a fluxmetric (FM) characterization performed using a fluxmeter bench. For the three methods, paraffin RT58 and polymer PEG6000, two PCM suitable for domestic hot water (DHW) storage, were characterized. For each PCM, no significant difference was observed on the latent heat and the total energy exchanged between the three characterization methods. However, DSC and STEP methods did not enable the accurate characterization of the supercooling process observed with the FM method for polymer PEG6000. For PEG6000, the shape of the enthalpy curve of melting also differed between the experiments on the calorimeter—DSC and STEP—methods, and the FM method. Concerning the PCM comparison, RT58 and PEG6000 appeared to have an equivalent energy density but, as the mass density of PEG6000 is greater, more energy is stored inside the same volume for PEG6000. However, as PEG6000 experienced supercooling, the discharging temperature was lower than for RT58 and the material is therefore less adapted to DHW storage operating with partial phase change cycles where the PCM temperature does not decrease below 52 °C.},

abstract = {This article studies a composite solar wall with latent storage (TES) designed to heat rooms inside buildings during the cold season. No numerical model of the composite solar wall is currently available in the Dymola/Modelica software library. The first objective of this work is to develop one such model. The article describes the elementary components, along with the equations that allow modeling the heat transfers and storage phenomena governing both the thermal behavior and performance of the solar wall. This model was built by assembling various existing basic elements from the software’s “Building” library (e.g., models of heat transfer by convection, radiation and conduction) and then creating new elements, such as the storage element incorporating the phase change material (PCM). To validate this solar wall model, numerical results are compared to experimental data stemming from a small-scale composite solar wall manufactured in our laboratory, and the experimental set-up could be tested under real weather conditions. After verifying the level of confidence in the model, the energy performance of two solar walls, one with a conventional storage wall (sensible heat storage) the other containing a PCM (the same as in the experiment), are compared. The result indicates that the solar wall incorporating a PCM does not in this case release any more energy in the room to be heated.},

abstract = {Phase change materials, such as sodium acetate trihydrate, are efficient materials for Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage (LHTES) according to their interesting thermal properties (high latent heat and specific heat). Their main drawback is a large degree of supercooling, up to 90 K for sodium acetate trihydrate, where the material may remain liquid below its melting point. However, heat could be released if the solidification could be triggered. For a better understanding of how heat is discharged after an initial cooling by external water flow and a solidification induction by seeding, the temperature was experimentally recorded to measure the residual solidification plateau duration. This experiment was repeated for different nucleation temperatures and fit well with the theoretical predictions. An increase of 90% in the solidification duration was observed when the supercooling degree dropped from 35 to 8 K. Thanks to an original experimental bench, this temperature record has been compared with a fully new method allowing the measurements of the material's opacification throughout the solidification process. Finally, two different opacification behaviors were observed for supercooling degrees below and above 20 K.},

abstract = {Modelling of latent heat thermal storage systems is mainly achieved with an analytical formulation describing the thermodynamic state of the phase change material (PCM). In literature, different models exist to describe the evolution of the liquid fraction, the effective heat capacity and the enthalpy as a function of temperature. The main issue is to correctly establish these behaviour laws and to identify the thermophysical properties of each PCM. Analytical models proposed in literature often have obvious limitations, such as the presence of discontinuities or the impossibility to represent asymmetric phase change dynamics. Such approaches a priori do not allow to model accurately the thermodynamic behaviour of the PCM. Given the limitations identified on existing models, a new analytical model is proposed in this paper. Moreover, it is not uncommon to observe the presence of two heat flux peaks during the phase change process of a PCM, as with the studied PCM (RT58). Therefore, we propose a method to model the two heat flux peaks, which are rarely considered in literature. PCM properties are determined thanks to a four-step identification process, using experimental data and the different analytical models studied. Based on the numerical modelling of the rectangular container used for the experiments, and on the identified thermodynamic properties of the enclosed PCM, a comparative study between the new analytical model and existing models is carried out. It appears that modelling only a single heat flux peak is not satisfactory for the studied PCM, and taking into account a second heat flux peak decreases the error on the exchanged energy by a factor of 2.5 to 6.5 depending on models. The new model leads to an accuracy gain of a factor of 1.5 to 3.3 compared with existing models. We do not recommend the model based on a linear evolution of the liquid fraction as the resulting error is between 1.6 and 3.3 times greater than for the other models. The study carried out is based on both melting and solidification processes, and concerns a PCM which does not undergo supercooling.},

abstract = {As the heating demands of buildings drop considerably, the use of solar walls makes increasing sense. One of the obstacles to the development of such walls is their need for on-site implementation by specialized companies. On the other hand, a storage wall is generally composed of heavy materials with high inertia, which prevents prefabrication of the solar component. To avoid this problem and allow for solar walls to be prefabricated in the factory, a novel approach to replacing this heavy wall with a lighter storage wall incorporating phase change materials (PCM) has been proposed. This paper aims to demonstrate the impact of PCM on the thermal energy performance once they have been integrated into the storage wall of the composite Trombe wall. Addressed herein will be the heat transfer exchange inside a house located in the northern part of France, where a composite Trombe wall has been fitted without PCM. Three configurations will be investigated—(1) the model house without the solar Trombe wall, defined as the reference configuration; (2) the model house integrating the concrete solar Trombe wall; and (3) the model house integrating the PCM solar Trombe wall. Two setpoint temperatures will be introduced—(a) a constant setpoint of 20 °C, and (b) a variable setpoint of 19 °C (14 h from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.) and 16 °C (10 h from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.). Furthermore, three different climate conditions will be adopted to run simulations—Paris-Orly, Lyon, and Nice. Dymola/Modelica, a dynamic thermal simulation tool, will be utilized to simulate the thermal performance of these defined configurations. The results obtained, regarding a solar Trombe wall installation that applies two distinct storage walls exposed to the weather of Paris, showed similar minimizations of the one-year energy heating demand inside the bedroom, equal to roughly 20% (i.e., 20.45% of concrete storage wall and 19.90% of PCM storage wall) compared to the reference configuration (i.e., the house with no solar Trombe wall). Based on the imposed setpoint temperature by means of night and day reductions, the resulting heating energy demand in the bedroom, through application of the two storage walls (concrete and PCM) and three different climatic regions could be minimized by 20.34% in Paris, 20.20% in Lyon, and 68.10% in Nice (for the concrete storage wall) vs. the reference configuration; and by 18.79% in Paris, 19.56% in Lyon, and 55.15% in Nice (for the PCM storage wall) vs. the reference configuration.},

abstract = {Thermal energy storage (TES), which features an innovative technology, can enhance energy efficiency in the building sector and reduce CO2 emissions. Due to their high heat storage capacity, phase change materials (PCMs) have impressed many researchers. This paper investigates the energy performance of an individual house integrating a solar Trombe wall containing PCM with respect to heating demand and thermal comfort applications. The thermal energy performance of the design house was simulated using Dymola/Modelica, the thermal building simulation tool, whereby the optimization of objective functions as regards heating demand and thermal comfort was executed using GenOpt, the generic optimization software. Optimization of the solar Trombe wall focuses on the feasibility to find the optimal PCM parameters when running GenOpt, which consist of latent heat, melting temperature, PCM thickness and thermal conductivity, in order to minimize both the annual energy consumption for heating and the number of hours of thermal discomfort. The parametric study was first conducted for each PCM parameter so as to not only observe its effect on the identified energy performance, but also ensure the absence of errors in simulation runs before performing the optimization. The ‘Coordinate Search’ Generalized Pattern Search (GPS) algorithm was applied to minimize the objective function, whereas the ‘Weighted Sum Approach’ was used to solve the multi-objective function problem. Results showed that the higher the latent heat, the lower the heating demand and the greater the thermal comfort. The results of these parametric studies show that for the effect of the parameter on heating, demand is quite limited (1-2 kWh·m−2·year−1) whereas the effect on thermal comfort is more significant. The optimal PCM melting temperature is higher for warmer climates; it is also higher for the studied case applying the optimization method to minimize the objective function by assigning the number of hours of thermal discomfort (from 32.8 ∘C to 35.9 ∘C, depending on weather) than it is when applying the optimization method to reduce the objective function by assigning heating demand (from 31.5 ∘C to 32.9 ∘C, again depending on weather).},

abstract = {An important prerequisite to select a reliable phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage applications is to test it under application conditions. In the case of solid-liquid PCM, a large amount of thermal energy can be stored and released in a small temperature range around the solid-liquid phase transition. Therefore, to test the long-term stability of solid-liquid PCM, they are subjected to melting and solidification processes taking into account the conditions of the intended application. In this work, 18 experimental devices to investigate the long-term stability of PCM are presented. The experiments can be divided into thermal cycling stability tests, tests on PCM with stable supercooling, and tests on the stability of phase change slurries (PCS). In addition to these experiments, appropriate methods to investigate a possible degradation of the PCM are introduced. Considering the diversity of the investigated devices and the wide range of experimental parameters, further work toward a standardization of PCM stability testing is recommended.},

abstract = {The determination of both the thermal and thermodynamical properties of a composite material containing phase change material is done thanks to an inverse method, which combines experimental measurements and numerical computations. Given first an in-house experiment, which allows us to test samples at a macroscopic scale (i.e., close to the real conditions) and to set various types of thermal stresses, and secondly the simulation of the corresponding thermal behavior, relying on an accurate thermodynamical modeling and taking into account the real operating parameters (e.g., thermal contact resistances and non-symmetric heat fluxes on each side), it is possible to characterize the solid and liquid thermal conductivities and heat capacities, as well as the temperature range associated with a non-isothermal phase transition and the associated latent heat. The specificity of the present approach is to allow, in a single step, a characterization of all the involved thermo-physical parameters that are usually required in simulation tools (e.g., EnergyPlus…). Moreover, the hitherto studies dealing with repeatability and uncertainties of the enthalpy characterization are generally very scant and not encountered very often or only with qualitative assessments. This is a clear caveat, especially when considering any system design. Therefore, for the first time ever, the present paper pays a special attention to the repeatability of the identification method and studies the scedasticity of the results, that is to say the deviations of the determined enthalpy curves, not only from a qualitative point of view but also by proposing quantitative arguments. Finally, the results are very promising since the agreement between all trials is excellent, the maximum error for all parameters being lower than 4%. This is far below the current quality thresholds admitted when characterizing the enthalpy of a phase change material.},

abstract = {An experimental device was designed to perform the thermal and dynamic study of natural convection airflow in an open vertical channel. The two side walls of the vertical channel are made of Plexiglas allowing the visualization of the flow via the PIV method. For the two other vertical walls, one is heated at a constant temperature, and the other is insulated with a 9 cm thick polystyrene insulation. The dynamic characterization of convection is carried out by non-intrusive measurements (Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)) and thermal phenomena are analyzed using non-intrusive heat flux instrumentation (Simultaneous temperature and velocity measurements have been carried out across the channel at different elevations). Moreover, this study deals with the influence of the Rayleigh number on the measured vertical velocity profiles as well as the thermal flux densities recorded along the heated wall. To do this, different values of the modified Rayleigh numbers were considered in the interval with the channel aspect ratio respectively of A= 5; and A = 12.5. The numbers of Nusselt obtained have been compared successfully with those of the literature. The effects of Rayleigh number and aspect ratio, on the velocity profiles, the convective and radiation heat transfer are examined in detail.},

This study was realized using a dynamic thermal simulation of the building using a modelica library (BuildSysPro). Initially, we have defined materials used for the building including the characteristics of the phase change material used (thermal conductivity, melting temperature, specific heat capacity, latent heat and density). We have tested two configurations: insertion of a layer of PCM mortar and incorporation of PCM in rock wool ceiling tiles. We study the influence of the over-ventilation during night on these two cases. By comparing the simulation results during summer, we have noticed that the over-ventilation during night has a significant influence in reducing the inner temperature of the building. The insertion of PCM in a layer of ceiling tiles didn’t have a significant efficiency contrary to the insertion of a layer of PCM mortar. Secondly, we have optimized the PCM characteristics in order to achieve more comfort during summer.},

abstract = {Supercooling is an undesired property of phase change materials due to the poorly predictable occurrence of crystallization during cooling. For such situations, the stored latent heat cannot be recovered which can be an issue for temperature-controlled applications. This review illustrates the techniques used for triggering crystallization in phase change materials having a supercooling property. The development of triggering devices should constitute a breakthrough for heat on demand applications, as heat can be released even when the temperature drops far below the liquidus temperature. Several techniques appear to be promising for nucleation triggering. They have been classified into two categories: passive (reduction of supercooling) or active (triggering of crystallization on demand) devices. They were accurately investigated for water freezing for: meteorological comprehension, food preservation or the pharmaceutical industry. In this paper, several nucleating agents (passive) have been explored, and most of them, added by 1 wt%, can decrease the supercooling degree by more than 90%. In addition, the heat would be immediately released on demand from a supercooled material by the use of seeding or electrofreezing (active methods). Solidification can also be externally triggered by the application of high pressure or ultrasonic waves (active). In addition to the analysis of the efficiency of the different techniques in terms of supercooling reduction, this review also discusses the solidification process at a microscopic scale.},

Their main drawback is their large supercooling, where the material may remain liquid below its melting point. However, this property should be turned into a benefit if a reliable way of triggering crystallization is developed, as heat could be released on demand. Sodium Acetate Trihydrate (SAT, CH3COONa.3H2O), which can exhibit 90K of supercooling, was used for this study. For a better understanding of how heat is released after crystallization triggering, caused by seeding, a fully new method was developed to measure the samples’ opacification, using a HeNe laser (633 nm) coupled with a photodetector, measuring the solid fraction thanks to the difference between liquid and solid specular transmittance. This technique was compared with temperature measurement and image processing, showing consistency between the different methods.},

abstract = {Recent studies concerning phase change material (PCM) characterization show that important errors occur if differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments are misinterpreted. Therefore, it is important to know the influence of such misinterpretation on system modeling. The present work deals with phase change materials integrated in building structure to reduce overheating. The objective is to evaluate the discrepancies consequences (temperatures, heat fluxes), due to the use of the misinterpreted DSC experiments at different heating rates to determine the enthalpy, in comparison with those determined with the actual value of the enthalpy of the PCM determined by a proven inverse method. A numerical model of a single-family house with a phase change material mortar is developed to evaluate the thermal comfort in the building. The results show that for free-running temperature, none of the enthalpy curve deduced directly from DSC can predict correctly the thermal behavior of the house and the thermal comfort. Moreover, the more the DSC heating rate and the more the discrepancy with the results from the reference inverse method.},

abstract = {We aim here at presenting the main results of the Stock-E MICMCP ANR 

	project whose principal goal is the correct thermophysical characterisation 

	of phase change materials in order to have reliable inputs when considering 

	numerical simulations of thermal behaviour of buildings. Firstly, 

	we will present the method developed to determine the function governing 

	the enthalpy with respect to the temperature of the material. It 

	is based on the use of experimental measurements together with an 

	inversion method: by comparing the heat flow with a simulated one, 

	obtained by assuming an a priori formulation of the enthalpy (which 

	set some basic thermodynamical constraints), we may calculate the 

	numerical values of the associated parameters. Secondly, we will 

	show that this method can be extended to macroscopic and heterogeneous 

	materials, which are more representative of real samples. Eventually, 

	we will show on some examples of thermal buildings simulations the 

	necessity to correctly represent the PCM behaviour if one wants to 

	use them in the future so as to save energy and for a better comfort.},
