abstract = {A Phase Change Material (PCM) provides heat and cooling by releasing and absorbing energy at the phase transition. They are employed in the construction of building walls in order to optimize thermal-energy-storage and maintain human comfort temperature. However, large numbers of competitive materials available, with each having its own thermophysical properties, the decision for selecting a suitable PCM involves several evaluation criteria. In this paper, a methodology is proposed to allow the decision maker to analyze, evaluate and select the best PCM according to different criteria. Five PCMs are compared in terms of thermal performance by using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. After this process, the obtained ranking was verified by using a simulation model and the actual thermophysical properties of the PCMs in the region of Marrakech during summer season. As a result, it turns out that the outputs of AHP are in good agreement with those obtained with the simulation model. Additionally, the BioPCM-Q23 is ranked first in terms of thermal performance. The simulation results indicate that the recommended position for the PCM layer should be at the interior surface, when it is placed after the isolator. Also, the proposed configuration can ensure a comfortable indoor climate with an indoor temperature around 23.5 ℃. Plus, it provides the same energy performance with a decrease in the thickness of the PCM by 1.5 cm, which significantly helps to save energy.},

abstract = {The integration of new building materials incorporating phase change material (PCM) into the building envelope leads to an increase of the heat storage capacity, which may have an influence on minimizing the cooling demand and heating of the building. This work addresses a thermal performance enhancement of brick walls with incorporated PCMs. The improvement has been assessed through a numerical approach in dealing with a one-dimensional transient conduction problem with phase change, while leaning on experimental results from a transient guarded hot plates method. The simulations have been fulfilled using a hybrid method combining both the finite volume method (FVM) and an enthalpy porosity technique. The results of this combined approach are in good agreement. In the light of the findings obtained, it appears that PCMs' incorporation into a brick masonry can both reduce peak temperatures up to 3°C and smooth out daily fluctuations. Thereby, the evaluation achieved can turns out useful in developing brick walls with an incorporated PCM for passive cooling, thus improving buildings' thermal performance.},

abstract = {Nowadays the building sector is considered to be the largest consumer of energy. Thus, new changes must be done in order to reduce and optimize the energy demand in buildings. Thermal energy storage systems, using phase change materials (PCMs) are gaining increasing attention due to its important role in achieving energy conservation in buildings. Three aspects have been presented in this review article: the PCMs, their encapsulation methods and their passive applications in buildings. The purpose of this paper is to offer an overview of previous works and recent studies of the integration of different PCMs into passive buildings, more specifically in building materials, walls, wallboards, roofs and floors. An up-to-date database of research articles was presented and their results regarding the implementation of PCMs in buildings and its impact on the energy conservation and thermal comfort were analyzed. It has been found that with the help of PCMs, the energy efficiency of buildings was improved, energy consumption cost was minimized, the heat was stored and the thermal comfort requirements were assured. In addition, PCMs can provide key solutions to energy shortages, carbon emissions and their serious threat to the environment. Based on the findings, future recommendations were proposed to work on the areas of research for further improvements.},

abstract = {This paper presents and discusses numerical simulation of the wind velocity's effect on infiltration rates in an individual building using multi-zone modelling. The governing equations are expressed in terms of unknown pressures at points where flow paths connect. Their implementation was achieved using an advanced numerical model, which was developed via the MATLAB environment. Such a numerical approach has been validated through available results. A good agreement has been observed between available data and our study's results. Moreover, the model implemented allows to determine the reference pressure in each zone to compute the air infiltration rate by each connection. To perform this, a large range of input data is needed. These include leakage characteristics of airflow elements, wind pressure coefficients, and ventilation system characteristics. To sum up, it is found that the wind velocity increase produces a strongly variation on computed infiltration rates.},

abstract = {This paper deals with the numerical investigation of heat transfer by mixed convection inside ventilated cavities with supply and exhaust slots, and filled with air under a steady and turbulent flow regime. Four configurations, rated A, B, C and D are considered here, according to the position of the inlet and outlet air ports: A, the inlet is on the top of the left vertical wall, while the outlet is on the bottom of the right vertical wall; B, the inlet is on the bottom of the left vertical wall and the outlet at the top of the opposite wall; C, the two slots are on the same side, i.e. the inlet is at the bottom and the outlet at the top of the left vertical wall, and D, the inlet is at the top and the outlet at the bottom of the left vertical wall. The bottom of the cavity is kept at a temperature TH and other walls are fixed at a temperature TC, with TH>TC. The cavity is provided with two slots: an inlet slot for introducing fresh air, and an outlet slot to extract hot air. The main aim sought here is to analyze the ventilation efficiency for temperature distribution, and fix the best configuration providing the thermal comfort targeted. We also address the influence of heating on the behavior of flow and thermal comfort, while considering different Rayleigh numbers ranging from 6.4×108 to 3.2×109. Numerical studies have been yet devoted to these configurations, using RANS simulations. The RNG k-ε turbulence model has been adopted for the turbulence closure, and the set of governing equations was then numerically solved via the finite volume method. The SIMPLEC algorithm was associated to ensure the pressure-velocity coupling. In terms of results achieved, the configuration D provides a better ventilation effectiveness for temperature distribution εT and ensures an even temperature in the occupied zone. As for configurations A and C, they maintain an acceptable level of heat and can be used in winter period to ensure good indoor air quality, while configuration B provides an efficiency close to unity and can be used to insure indoor air quality in temperate climate zones.},

abstract = {This study presents numerical investigation and analysis of carbon dioxide transport (CO2) within an isothermal three-dimensional room using impinging jet ventilation (IJV). The IJV is an effective strategy for use in buildings. The study is carried out under turbulent and transient flow regime. The URANS equations supplemented with energy and concentration equations are solved using the scStream code. We are targeting primarily the efficiency of the ventilation ɛC and the index of indoor air quality (IIAQ). The ventilation flow rate is 50 m3.h-1. Here, our ultimate aim is to analyse the behaviour of the flow and repartition of CO2 inside the room. The RNG k−ε model was adopted to handle the turbulence. CFD simulations were systematically checked through available experimental and/or numerical results. The obtained results indicated that the IJV ensures a homogeneous concentration distribution and a velocity of the ambient air less than 0.25 m.s-1. This is in agreement with the recommendations of ASHRAE Standard 55. The comparative results demonstrate that the IJV evacuates sufficiently the CO2 and ensures good air quality in an acceptable time.},
