abstract = {The present work reports on the influence of nickel molar loading and impregnation solutions, nitrate salts and copper and nickel ammonium complexes, on the synthesis of Ni-Cu catalyst supported on alumina for obtaining carbon nanofibers by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of methane. These catalysts were characterized by N 2 adsorption-desorption, x-ray Diffraction, Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy for the carbon nanostructures analysis. The catalytic activity was studied through the carbon deposition under different conditions of temperature (600 °C and 650 °C) and pressure (in ultra-low pressure conditions and 0.5 bar). As a main result, catalyst using nitrate salts impregnation leads to the major carbon nanofibers yielding at the temperature of 600 °C. On the other hand, catalysts synthesized by ammonium complexes impregnation present also improved characteristics compared to conventional catalysts that allows considering this methodology as an interesting alternative in carbon nanofibers producing.},

abstract = {The hardness of a material shows its ability to resist to microplastic deformation caused by indentation or penetration and is closely related to the plastic slip capacity of the material. Therefore, it could be significant to study the resistance to microplastic deformations based on microhardness changes on the surface, and the associated accumulation of fatigue damage. The present work is part of a research study being carried out with the aim of proposing a new method based on microstructural changes, represented by a fatigue damage indicator, to predict fatigue life of steel structures submitted to cyclic loads, before macroscopic cracking. Here, Berkovich indentation tests were carried out in the samples previously submitted to high cycle fatigue (HCF) tests. It was observed that the major changes in the microhardness values occurred at the surface of the material below 3 μm of indentation depth, and around 20% of the fatigue life of the material, proving that microcracking is a surface phenomenon. So, the results obtained for the surface of the specimen and at the beginning of the fatigue life of the material will be considered in the proposal of a new method to estimate the fatigue life of metal structures.},

abstract = {The present study has been conducted in order to obtain titanium carbide layer using a conversion treatment consisting of two main steps. In the first step a thin pure titanium layer was deposited on 120C4 carbon steel by PVD. In the second step, the carbon atoms from the substrate diffuse to the titanium coating due to a vacuum annealing treatment and the Ti coating transforms into titanium carbide. Depending on the annealing temperature a partial or complete conversion into TiC is obtained. The hardness of the layer can be expected to differ depending on the processing temperatures. By a systematic study of the hardness as a function of the applied load, we confirm the process of growth of the layer.},

abstract = {Abstract Polymer clay nanocomposites (PCNs) have been seen as the most novel materials in engineering applications since they exhibit significant improvement in mechanical and physical properties. Indeed, with few amount of organoclay, PCNs exhibit enhanced mechanical, optical, thermal and liquid or gas barrier properties compared to pure polymers and to their counterpart microcomposites. Thus, organoclays are extensively used as precursors in the preparation of PCNs. They are the best candidate in reinforcing PCNs because of the lightweight and the high availability of clay minerals in the nature. However, structure and physical phenomena arising at molecular level in organoclays, and subsequently in PCNs, are not completely or difficultly accessible with existing experimental techniques. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was conducted using the combination of two force fields (CLAYFF and CHARMM) to evaluate the thermodynamics and structural properties of organoclay such as heat capacities, isothermal bulk modulus, density, basal spacing and chains arrangement in the interlayer spacing. Our results regarding the basal spacing and density are in fairly good agreement with available experimental data. This allows us to validate the use of the two force fields to represent interactions in organoclays. The effect of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) on the basal spacing and the thermodynamics properties is assessed. We found, through our MD simulation, that the calculated isothermal bulk modulus is in good agreement with the density value of organoclays with two different CEC.},
