abstract = {Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) are composed of two different materials: natural aggregate and attached cement paste. It is generally admitted that finer the RCA greater is the quantity of adhered cement paste. In this study it is shown that for a given granular class, very large disparities may be present in the adhered cement paste content, which could generate dispersion of the results of characterization tests of RCA. The heterogeneity of a narrow granular class of coarse RCA (6.3/10 mm) was investigated by sorting samples according to their densities using a water jig. The water jig sorting was essentially a separation by density and not by size. It was shown that the average water absorption after an immersion in water during 24 h was about 5% for a representative sample of the feed RCA, before sorting tests, while for the homogenous specimens separated by density, the water absorption ranged from 2% to 9%. The distribution of the water absorption in a sample of 120 kg of RCA was well estimated by a log-normal distribution. This intrinsic heterogeneity of RCA implies being able to have representative samples with sufficient accuracy, not only concerning the size but also the mineral composition of grains in the stockpiles of RCA. So, after discussing the results of this study, water jig appeared to be an efficient tool to separate RCA and obtain representative samples for their characterization.},

have the eco-friendly label. The quest to protect the environment has enabled researches to find alternate materials which can fit

to substitute traditional materials with construction and demolition waste by keeping the same slump value and by replacing 

natural fine aggregates (NFA) with Construction and Demolition Waste (C&D) materials and investigate their properties on 

fresh and hardened concrete. To determine and compare the properties, different tests were performed to evaluate the 

workability, density, compressive strength, flexural strength and absorption of each concrete mix. The results demonstrated that, 

construction and demolition waste materials with a define slump range decreases the compressive strength and flexural strength, 

and the water absorption increases with increasing C&D content.},

abstract = {This research work highlights the rheological and mechanical behavior of clayey/starch mixes. Several native and derivate starches have been studied in association with two types of clayey materials : quarry fines and kaolinite. The mixes were manufactured with a constant starch/clayey material ratio of 1%. The optimal water content has been determinate by the flow test. The rheological and mechanical tests have shown a significant effect of starch on the properties of mixes. In the rheological part, most starches have induced an increase up to four times the thixotropic index for quarry fines, while a decrease of this parameter has been observed with the kaolinite. From a mechanical point of view, all starches increase mechanical strengths whatever the clayey material.},

abstract = {Lime and hemp concretes are used as infill materials manually tamped in timber stud walls or more recently in the form of precast blocks. In either case, the structural design practice of wood frame construction associated with hemp concrete does not assume any contribution of the plant-based concrete whereas it may contribute towards the racking strength of the wall. This work is intended to evaluate the shear behaviour of two different bio-based concretes by means of triaxial compression. Hemp shives and whole rice husks were mixed with a lime-based binder according to the same mix proportioning and mixes were vibro-compacted in cylindrical forms. Then, samples were cured at 23°C – 65%RH before being tested under unconfined and triaxial compression. The triaxial shear test was performed after 60days of curing on unsaturated specimens under drained conditions at air pressure and for increasing effective confining pressure (from 25 to 150kPa). It was possible to estimate the shear strength parameters (peak friction angle and cohesion) of the two plant-based concretes. Comparing results, it appears a consistent value of cohesion but a different friction angle related to the binder and the aggregate contributions respectively. This leads to a first analysis of the relationship between the composition of the concrete (plant aggregates cemented with a binder) and its shear strength. Furthermore, the ductility of plant-based concretes is markedly enhanced as the mean effective pressure increases. Finally, the shear strength of plant-based concretes should be considered as part of the design practice of building envelopes.},

abstract = {A series of almost fully substituted Fatty Acid Starch Esters (FASEs) has been obtained in a homogeneous LiCl/DMAc medium by grafting octanoyl (C8), lauroyl (C12) and palmitoyl (C16) chlorides onto 3 starch species: Amylo-Maize, Potato and Waxy Maize. Structure-property relationships of FASEs are investigated as a function of both fatty acid chain length and amylose/amylopectin ratio of the starch. The structural study has revealed a layered type organization in which starch chain planes are separated by fatty chains. The latter are interpenetrated and/or tilted for FASE-C16 whatever the origin of the starch is, and fatty chains partially crystallizes into a structure with hexagonal symmetry. FASEs with C8 and C12 side chains are totally amorphous. The mechanical behavior of FASEs is shown to depend on both side chain length and amylose/amylopectin ratio, and an increase in material ductility is observed at increasing amylose content for C8 and C12 side chains.},

abstract = {Hydrogel-based drug delivery systems encounter great scientific attention nowadays. Semi-interpenetrating network systems with hydrogel features have been studied as potential drug carriers due to their water intake capacity, biocompatibility and biodegradability. One of the most important features of drug delivery systems is biocompatibility and as such materials derived from natural resources seem to be more appropriate to act as excipients. In this respect, two new semi-interpenetrating networks (semi-IPNs) with hydrogel features based on chitosan, two novel oligomers derived from monosaccharides and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) have been synthesized and characterized using FTIR, thermogravimetry, SEM/EDX and swelling behavior. The new sugar-derived oligomers (GI and MI) with double bonds available for further polymerization were obtained by polycondensation of 1,3-propanediol with dicarboxylic acids derived from glucose/mannose skeleton with itaconic anhydride moieties. GI and MI oligomers were characterized by FTIR, NMR spectroscopy and ESI–MS spectrometry, which showed molecular weights of about 7000 Da and linear polymerization chain structure. The new semi-IPNs show good thermal behavior and these hydrogels display a swelling tendency by loading significantly more water in an acid environment than in a neutral solution. Moreover, these superabsorbent hydrogels are able to load significant amount of hydrosoluble active principle (herein the antibiotic levofloxacin) and their releasing profile is marked by an important “burst effect”.},

abstract = {This work aims to improve the formulation of short flax fiber-reinforced mortar through coating the raw fibers with hydraulic binders like cement or lime, or cleaning them in boiling water prior to the coating. These treatments are chosen for their ability to reduce the water intake by the fibers and to minimize the migration of their extractible compounds toward the cement matrix. Formulations incorporating raw or treated fibers were characterized in the fresh state. The results showed a drastic reduction of water intake, which correlates with an improvement of the properties of the fiber-mortar mixtures in the fresh state, particularly in terms of the heat of hydration, initial setting time and consistency. Mechanical behavior of the different formulations is also evaluated by flexural tests.},

abstract = {In France, construction sector annual needings for granular materials are close to 400 million tons, of which 96% are natural origin. Therefore it becomes highly necessary to find alternatives solutions, particularly in the valorisation of industrial by-products (IBP) 

such as dredging sediments. Marine sediments are designated as a secondary raw material in this study. However, the latter may present varying levels of pollution, with the presence of organic matter (5% to 30%), relatively high water content (50% to 200%) and a fairly fine granulometry (6 300μm). Currently, research target to use them as a supplementary 

mineral addition in concrete after efficient methods of treatment that improve some physico-chemical properties. The aim of this this study is to establish a profitable methodology for the use of sediments in cementitious matrix. In this report, we present first a bibliographical review on this subject. At the experimental level, a physico-chemical characterization was carried out, determining the major parameters to be considered, the effects of the treatment on material properties, the likely impact of the presence of 

sediments in the cementitious matrix, and an experimental methodology to quantify these various effects. The cementitious materials formulated will be analysed and characterized at four scales : physico-chemical, mechanical, durability and the environmental impact. The analysis of the mechanical results makes possible to assess the activity of this material 

and to implement adapted formulation laws.},

La détermination des caractéristiques physiques et chimiques principales est obtenue grâce à des essais de: granulométrie, masse volumique spécifique, la surface spécifique BET, estimation temps de début de prise ainsi que la chaleur d’hydratation par calorimétrie Langavant. Les essais chimiques menés sont entre autres: l’analyse ATG, la diffractométrie au rayon X (DRX) et la fluorescence X (FX), qui ont permis de quantifier les fractions, phases et éléments chimiques présents. Les essais à la compression ont été effectués conformément à la NF EN 196-1 à des échéances de 7 jours – 14 jours - 28 jours et 60 jours sur l’ensemble des mortiers formulés: les mortiers à base 100% de ciment CEM I 52.5N, sur ceux substitués à des taux de 8% et 15% par le sédiment traité. Ceux-ci ont permis de relever un apport dû à l’activité confirmée par des essais de calorimétrie ou du point de vue physique à une possible nucléation hétérogène autour des grains de sédiment. 

In this study, a sediment was used as a secondary raw material in cement substitution with prior treatment. The treatment adopted is a physical treatment involving grinding and separation to obtain different fractions, using a dry method (1mm, 250µm, 120µm) and washing method (250µm and 120µm). They were subsequently heat treated at temperatures of 650°C, 750°C and 850°C for 1h and 3h, in order to enable chemical activation by decarbonation or by pozzolanic activation of the material. Different characterization tests were performed. The determination of main physical and chemical characteristics was obtained through multiple techniques: particle size distribution, specific density, the BET surface area, the initial setting time and hydration heat calorimetry Langavant. The chemical tests include: TGA analysis, X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) which were used to quantify the fractions, phases and chemical elements present. Compression tests were performed conforming NF EN 196-1 French standard, over terms of 7days – 14days – 28days and 60days on all formulated mortars: reference mortar based on 100% CEM I 52.5N binder and cement substituted mortars with 8% and 15% by treated sediment. This clearly evidenced contribution due to chemical activity which was confirmed by calorimetry monitoring and strength investigation.},

Cette caractéristique peut être appréciée au travers de la mesure de l’activité pouzzolanique. Dans cette étude, la pouzzolanicité d’une certaine catégorie de matériaux est étudiée. Pour cela, les essais de Frattini conforme à la norme NF EN 196-5, l’essai Chapelle accéléré, la mesure de la conductivité électrique et le calcul du coefficient d’activité mécanique sont mis en place. Les résultats indiquent que le sédiment brut provenant du Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque présente une relative faible activité pouzzolanique quel que soit le test considéré. Cependant, l’étude de fractions calcinées par voie directe ou par calcination flash a montré que le sédiment présente, à l’issue de ces processus, une activité améliorée. L’étude comparée avec plusieurs additions courantes a permis de démontrer la bonne fiabilité des méthodes de Chapelle et l’indice d’activité mécanique pour une grande diversité d'additions minérales. Toutefois, au test de conductivité, une correction doit être appliquée du fait de la présence de sels dissous. Des coefficients d’activité mécanique χA=0.88 et χA=0.73 ont été déterminés respectivement pour le STFC (flash) et le STDC (calcination directe). En conséquence, les sédiments, moyennant un traitement adéquat peuvent être utilisés comme des additions minérales actives pour les matrices cimentaires. Admixtures or supplementary cementitious materials are generally characterised by their ability to react in specified conditions. This can be assumed through the pozzolanicity. In this study, the pozzolanic activity of a certain category of materials was investigated. For this purpose, the Frattini test conforming to NF EN 196-5 French standard, the accelerated Chapelle test, the measurement of the electrical conductivity and the calculation of mechanical activity coefficient were performed. The raw sediment from Dunkirk harbour presented a relatively low pozzolanic activity regardless of the test considered. However, the study of direct or flash calcined materials evidenced that sediment acquired at the end of these processes an improvement of pozzolanic activity. The comparative study conducted on several common admixtures also inferred that the Chapelle and mechanical activity index methods are quite appropriate and reliable. Nevertheless, in the conductivity test, a correction must be applied due to the presence of dissolved salts. A mechanical activity coefficient of χA=0.88 and χA=0.73 was determined for STFC (flash) and STDC (direct lab kiln) respectively. As a result, sediment, following an optimized treatment can be used as active mineral admixture in cementitious matrixes.},

abstract = {Resuspension of bedded sediments was simulated under laboratory-controlled conditions in order to assess the amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) remobilized in the dissolved fraction during one short and vigorous mixing. The desorbed amount of PAH was compared to the exchangeable fraction, the total amount of PAH sorbed on the sediment particles, and the dissolved PAH amount contained in the interstitial pore waters in order to evaluate the contribution of each fraction to the total amount of PAH released. To monitor the desorption of PAH and measure low trace level concentrations, passive samplers were used in an experimental open flow through exposure simulator. Results show that for the selected sediment, a substantial fraction of sorbed PAH (69 % of the total amount) is not available for remobilization in a depleted medium. Obtained data pinpoint that over 9 days, only 0.007 % of PAH are desorbed by passive diffusion through a water-sediment interface area of 415 cm2 and that an intense resuspension event of 15 min induces desorption of 0.015 % of PAH during the following 9 days. Results also highlight that during resuspension simulation, modifications of the sediment and the water body occurred since partitioning constants of some pollutants between sediment and water have significantly decreased.},
